Icyria (officially known as the Kingdom of Icyria) is a sovereign state that covers the majority of the continent of Orumia. It shares its sole land border with Vasuria to the north. With a population of 408 million people, Icyria is the homeland of the avian people of Gatrovia, and is one of the cradles of civilisation.
The lands of Icyria were inhabited by anthropomorphic avians since the Neolithic era around the source of the Ciphra River. Icyrian civilisation is traditionally dated to have begun around 3500 AV during the appearance of city states around the River Laku, one of the major tributaries of the River Ciphra. Ancient Icyrian society gradually borrowed technology, writing and cultural practises from neighbouring Barzora throughout the second half of the 2nd millennia AV. In 1830 AV, the first mention of the word ‘Ikeristana’ appeared on several Nogardu Obelisks during the rise and established of of the Netuban Empire in 1832 AV (attested by ancient turtle scribes). A succession of empires followed until 726 AV with the establishment of the First Icyrian Empire under Dardrasas the Great. At its height in 672 AV, the empire stretched from Helicivia to the island of Rudia. A series of rebellions ended the First Empire from 448 to 388 AV, during which a succession of weak dynasties attempted to take control of the empire. In 350 AV, Heclivinian King Azartes III conquered a severely weakened Icyria, making himself king of the avian lands. Heclivinian rule lasted from 350 to 150 AV, during which delphid rule, institutions and culture eroded amidst re-Icyrianisation efforts. The Second Empire of Icyria was established in 114 AV under the Arvid dynasty which conquered the remaining Heclivinian ruled lands of Icyria over the next several decades, bringing Icyria in contact with Vasuria. Between 110 AV to 500 PV, relations remain in constant flux between Icyria and Vasuria, with periods of peace and trade to all out war. Between the year 595 to 695, Icyria became a puppet of Vasuria after the unprecedented conquest of their homeland by Emperor Valaxian the Great. In 710, a revived Icyria reasserted itself as an economic and military powerhouse under the Nazvadid Dynasty, reconquering some of its traditional lands held by Vasuria. Icyria went through a period of relative stability up until the 950s when Icyria found itself fighting against Vasuria again and subsequently losing the war by the 980s. In 1010, the country underwent a political crisis which saw the Icyrian Siglos weaken amidst poor economic growth and an exodus of Icyrians to other countries.
The system of government of Icyria is that of a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with liberal democratic institutions and election. The head of state is king Povram II of the current ruling Nazvadid dynasty. A hawk, he has been king since 981. The head of government is led by the Grand Vizier (or prime minister) who presides over the National Assembly of Icyria. While the official religion of the state is Avecitism, in particular the Razartardi school of jurisprudence, freedom of religion is guaranteed by the constitution and enforced by current legislations. Icyria places emphasis on high social spending on government services, including universal healthcare, subsidised education, child benefits and a generally laxed emigration policy to encourage Icyrians to travel abroad.
Icyria as a political entity fluctuated between empire and ceasing to exist on the map. Its cultural impact around the world is felt in its mathematical, scientific, astronomical, artistic, technological, cultural, religious and political achievements. Despite the recent political crises since the 1000s, Icyria continues to play a significant international role in the world of geopolitics. Icyria today is a member of the International Gatrovian League, Avian Community, Advanced Economy Group, 977 Space Treaty, International Criminal Justice Agreement and Six Alignments Agreement. Icyria has a significant military and diplomatic presence globally, and operates numerous military bases across other avian states through the Six Alignments, a mutual defence treaty between Icyria, Cotto, Pratheia, Hylarthan, Cazrania and Picimaka.
The economy of Icyria is dominated by its diverse and robust manufacturing sector. While most Icyrians are employed in the service industry, manufacturing accounts for 40% of the economy’s GDP. Icyria has an export oriented economy with its primary export being textiles, wheat, meat products, computer components, minerals, diamonds, oil, natural gas and military hardware. Economic sanctions from Vasuria-aligned mammalian countries have placed significant economic barriers for Icyrians both on a domestic and international level, forcing them to rely on alternate markets in Cormantia, Madrucia and other avian nations. Today, Icyria’s GDP stands at US$15 trillion, making it the fourth largest economy in the world as of 1019. The per capita income has fallen in he last decade, dropping Icyria to a upper-middle income country with a GDP per capita (PPP) of $US30,989.
